Charles Jacobs

Bourbon Street Blues

SONO 1054

New Orleans is famous for great musicians and singers.  The City has lived up to its fame and continues to spawn fabulous talent.  Charles Jacobs is ready to take his place at the top of the list of New Orleans artists.

Born in Prentiss, Mississippi, Charles moved to New Orleans after high school.  His years in Mississippi spent absorbing Delta blues helped shape Charles   unique musical style.  Gospel music played an important part in Charles upbringing and the soul of Gospel can be felt in Charles voice.  No one grows up without being influenced by the musical greats: BB King, James Brown, Howlin Wolf, Lightning Hopkins, Johnny Taylor, T Bone Walker, Albert King, Ray Charles and the feeling of the great music of the Rhythm & Blues of the masters.  Charles is a modern day mixture of much of the music that he has heard.  This wonderful mixture of the many artists, both singers and players, provides a show of continuous excitement.

Charles has been a mainstay at the R&B Club on Bourbon Street for many years.  His dominance of the time slot that he fills is legendary.  When the “Street is empty of people, Charles performance always manages to fill every seat in the house!  Many countries are represented in the audiences in the R&B Club for his shows.  The universal appeal of the music comes from the wide variety of Charles musical styles.  The Blues is the prevailing thread that is woven into a large cloth of musical colors.

This CD was recorded with the purpose of showing the width of Charles Jacobs musical horizon.  After completing twelve songs, it was obvious that we could not show Charles full talents.  Another recording is being planned to help complete the picture.

The musicians that make up the band are the ones that work with Charles on a nightly basis.  Their inspired playing and Charles arrangements give each song a new life!  Charles leads the group with both his voice and his guitar.  Listen to the guitar playing throughout the recording, then listen to the singing.  Then, visualize Charles doing both at the same time, while leading the band!
This was a “live session in the true meaning.

Charles judgement of his audience s desires is a natural instinct.  Appealing to a different audience each night, sometimes for a different audience each hour, is a challenge that Charles loves.  By feeling the response of the crowd, he instinctively leads his audience through a short history of American music.  Each show varies widely, guided only by Charles appreciation of his audience.  A great artist is the one who give his audience what it loves, and Charles has become a master!
Encompassing the styles of BB King, Buddy Guy, James Brown, T Bone Walker, Brook Benton, Howling Wolf, Charles Jacobs puts his on mark on these great songs.  Charles Jacobs and the band bring you a live recording of a night on Bourbon Street.
